Painting lesson for RED at Capital Repertory Theatre

Posted on April 18, 2013 at 7:35 PM Comments comments (0)

April 2013, I worked with Capital Repertory Theatre and Actor Kevin McGuire and showed them how I paint. The performance they are part of is called RED. A story about Mark Rothko, classified as an abstract expressionist painter. It was a great process to show them how to handle a brush and work with the movement and paint, as they have never done so before.

A great write up about the arts in Downtown Albany- Spotlight Albany Center Gallery

"For 35 years, Albany Center Gallery (ACG) has ensured an active, engaged arts community in Downtown Albany. Today, Executive Director Tony Iadicicco is keeping that legacy alive, presenting acclaimed, monthly rotating exhibits at ACG’s Columbia Street location.

“There’s always something new and different,” he says, “One month we’ll have sculpture, the next anything from photography or abstract paintings to stained glass, and even graphic design. It’s a testament to how much diversity and depth of talent we have in the local region.”

Since 1977, Albany Center Gallery has been dedicated to exclusively showcasing local art, highlighting the work of an ever-expanding range of artists living within a 150-mile radius of Albany. Three upcoming shows capture the variety of work and artists the gallery continues to present to its increasingly diverse audience.

“In the next few months, we have our Members Show, which is a big, salon-style show with a tremendous range of high-quality work, followed by the Hudson Mohawk Regional Invitational, where we select a few recent award-winning artists and provide an in-depth look at their body of work,” Iadicicco says. “And for the first time ever we’ll be hosting the High School Regional, which is a unique showcase for the Capital Region’s young and up-and-coming talent. All told, we’re expecting to show over 200 local artists this winter.”

But ACG’s work doesn’t stop there.

project art

In an effort to reach outside of the gallery walls, Iadicicco conceived project art, a series of limited-time-only art shows that serve as an extension of ACG’s mission to showcase local art.

“We were looking at ways to expand our presence and diversify our audience while highlighting the great buildings and spaces we have in our Downtown neighborhoods – some of which people might not be aware of.”

The first show in the project art series took place on November 2, 2012, in a three-story building at 46 Columbia Street. Titled Capital Identity, the one-night-only show featured the work of three of Albany’s young artists: Patrick Porter, Alex Waters, and RADICAL! The opening drew a large, diverse crowd of visitors – and even brought a tenant into the previously unoccupied space.

“The landlord and tenant had a deal within days,” Iadicicco says.

The next project art show will be at the Great Northeast Home Show at the Times Union Center from February 8 to February 10, focusing on art’s important, and evolving place in everyday living.

“We’ll keep working. We’ll keep showing,” Iadicicco says, “project art confirms there’s a great audience for what we’re doing at ACG. There are a ton of exciting things happening Downtown, and we’re proud to be a part of everything.”

Sculpture in the Streets: A Social Media Sensation

Myself and artist Gutman Black created this clog. Check out below for the write up.

Brightly painted, brilliantly designed: just a few phrases to describe the clogs that make up the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District’s (BID) 2012 Sculptures in the Streets. With an eclectic mix of Albany landmarks and personal stories included in the designs, these clogs add character and color to the streets. What makes them even more fantastic is the amount of fun they attract to Downtown Albany. Two of these clogs – there are six large single and four small pairs in total – have even sparked their own Facebook pages. The Maiden Lane pedestrian bridge clog Facebook features people posing, dancing and having fun on and around the clog while the Beaver Street clog Facebook invites visitors to look into the past. The two artists set up a camera to capture the fun and have added the photos to Facebook for the world to see. Within the ‘Best of Cloggers’ album, people dance, jump and perform – and those are just the first three pictures. In one photo, kids use the clog as boats, rowing towards the Hudson, while in another photo, a couple uses the clog like a roller coaster. The number of ways to interact with the clog seems boundless.

The Beaver Street Clog Facebook focuses on the art of the clog itself. With a map of Albany circa 1857, visitors can take a peek into the past to see if their favorite streets and attractions had been built yet. It is no surprise that Albany has evolved in myriad ways in the past century and a half – and this clog is there to prove it. The Facebook pages do a great job of highlighting the limitless childlike imagination, the evolution of a city over time, and just the type of people who live, work and play in Downtown Albany. Even though each photo is definitely its own, it goes without saying that one thing is true: people can’t help but smile when they see those clogs. Visit the Facebook pages by going to:www.facebook.com/clogof.albany and http/www.facebook.com/albanys.sole.

The BID has also created a Facebook for Sculpture in the Streets which can be accessed at http/www.facebook.com/ SculptureInTheStreetsAlbanyNY. For a map of all of the clogs in the exhibit, visit the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) offices at 40 N. Pearl Street or online at www.downtownalbany.org.
